Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a delirium education program for nurses and assess its effects on knowledge of delirium, the importance of nursing intervention, and nursing practice.

Method: Participants comprised 60 nurses in a university hospital. The experimental group participated in a 3-hour delirium education program. Data were collected using structured questionnaires. Chi square and independent t-tests were conducted to examine similarities in demographic and dependent variables, and an independent t-test was used to test the hypothesis.

Results: The experimental group obtained significantly higher scores than the control group in knowledge of delirium(t=14.52, p<.001), importance of nursing intervention(t=13.76, p<.001), and nursing practice (t=13.71, p<.001).

Conclusion: Results suggest that delirium education is an effective tool to improve knowledge of delirium, importance of nursing intervention, and nursing practice. Therefore, delirium education would be beneficial for general ward and recently graduated nurses as well as ICU and experienced nurses.
